Healthy taco seasoning

You may not know this, but store-bought taco seasoning is loaded with sodium. You most likely don’t know that it also contains silica. Yes, the same stuff that comes in little packets inside your new shoes that says “DO NOT EAT”. You’re eating something that was never intended for consumption. Preservatives are in so many things that we eat, and being aware of what is in your food is a great step towards making healthy diet choices.

Here is an easy, (silica-free) homemade taco seasoning recipe!*

1 tablespoon chili powder

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1 and 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 to 1 teaspoon sea salt (more or less to taste)

1 teaspoon black pepper

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together and store in a airtight container.
  2. When ready to use, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of this mixture plus 1/2 to 3/4 cup of water per 1 pound of cooked meat of your choice. Simmer until very littler water is left.
  3. Serve with your favorite taco toppings and enjoy!

*Please note that this can be a a little spicy. Feel free to leave out the chili powder and red pepper flakes if you’re serving to spice-averse friends and family.
